Olympiacos’ free-fall in the EuroLeague standings was put on hold on Friday night after the Piraeus giants claimed a vital 89-76 win over Buducnost VOLI Podgorica at the Moraca Sports Center in Montenegro on Friday night.

Olympiacos snapped a five-game losing skid that saw the Piraeus side fall from contending for homecourt in the playoffs to barely hanging onto the final playoff spot.

Georgios Printezis tallied 19 points to lead all Olympiacos scorers as the Greek international enjoyed a solid shooting night off the bench for David Blatt’s side.

Nikola Milutinov played a massive role at both ends of the court with a 15-point, 12-rebound double-double while Axel Toupane, Nigel Williams-Goss, and Sasha Vezenkov also finished in double figures

Buducnost, who sit in a tie for second-last in the EuroLeague standings, were led by Edwin Jackson and Filip Barovic’s 13-point efforts.

Olympiacos grabbed an early lead in the first quarter and held on for a 27-21 advantage after the opening ten minutes in the Montenegrin capital.

A dominant effort from the Erythrolefki in the second quarter blew the game wide-open as Olympiacos used a 24-13 run in the second frame to storm out to a 51-34 lead by halftime.

Olympiacos continued to add to their lead after halftime but by then the pace at which the Piraeus giants were adding to their lead had slowed down, though the scoreboard still heavily favoured the Greek side (73-54) after three quarters.

With Olympiacos sharing minutes in the fourth quarter, Buducnost began to eat into Olympiacos’ lead in the final frame but the Montenegrin side couldn’t recover from their disastrous first half performance.

The win sees Olympiacos avoid tying the club’s worst-ever run of six-straight losses from the 2004 seaason as the Eythrolefki improve to 13-12 on the season.

Olympiacos will shift their focus to domestic duty with a trip to face Lavrio in the Basket League on Monday ahead of next Friday’s all-important trip across the Adriatic to face AX Armani Exchange Olimpia Milan in another important clash on the continent.
