As the old cliche goes, “money does not always play an important role in derbies,” and this saying it is particularly true in the Derby of Eternal Enemies. Panathinaikos are cash-strapped and forced to field a squad primarily made up of youngsters, whereas Olympiacos have a huge budget and have a roster worth more than any other team in Greece. However, this has not dictated the run of results in recent years, as gutsy Panathinaikos sides share a fairly evenly matched record with their higher valued counterparts.

Olympiacos managed to buck this trend last Sunday by beating the Trifylli 1-0 in a match played behind closed doors at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium. Aside from two controversial talking points, all it took was one moment of brilliance from an Olympiacos perspective and one lapse in concentration from a Panathinaikos point of view.

However, it is worth looking at the respective values of both squads. The Reds have assembled a team that is worth 86.3 million EUR according to “Transfermarkt,” as opposed to the Greens, who have a squad worth 17.7 million EUR.

As a result, Olympiacos boast a squad worth almost five times more than that of their arch-rivals. However, the match itself did not certainly play out that one-sided.

At 10 million EUR, injured captain Kostas Fortounis is the highest valued player for Olympiacos according to “Transfermarkt,” and Mady Camara comes in at second spot with a value of eight million EUR. For Panathinaikos, Dimitris Kourbelis is the highest valued at two million EUR, and on-loan midfielder Ghayas Zahid is second at 1.5 million EUR.

In terms of the average ages of the squads, Panathinaikos boast the youngest team in the entire Greek Super League (23.6 years old), whereas Olympiacos have an average age of 26.5 years old (10th out of the 14 top-flight teams).
