Olympiacos suffer first home loss

In the LEN Champions League, Spain’s Barceloneta defeated Olympiacos 15-9 in Greece.

After losing their first match earlier this month at Jug Dubrovnik, Olympiacos were keen to get back to winning ways. However, they quickly found themselves trailing 1-4 after the first period, and 2-6 by halftime. They then went down 3-9, but were able to reduce the deficit to 6-9 by the end of the third period. However, the Spaniards ultimately were too strong, with 9-15 being the final score. Olympiacos’ top scorers were Stefan Mitrovic (three goals) and Alexandros Gounas (two goals).

As a result of this loss, Olympiacos now drop from first to third place (out of eight teams) in Group A, behind Barceloneta and Jug Dubrovnik. Olympiacos will return to Champions League action on March 4, when they will face sixth-placed Spandau 04 in Germany. The Erythrolefki beat the Germans 13-8 at home back in November.
