Olympiacos thump woeful Xanthi in Karaiskaki season finale

Olympiacos continued their strong finish to the SuperLeague season with a 4-0 hammering of Xanthi at the Georgios Karaiskakis on Sunday - a result which kept PAOK’s title party on hold for another week.

A first-half double from Guilherme and further strikes from Omar and Kostas Fortounis saw Pedro Martins’ team cruise to another goal-laden victory following up last weekend’s 5-0 win over Panetolikos.

While the result was another impressive three-point haul for the Piraeus club, it also meant that PAOK’s march to the title was delayed for another round of fixtures since the Thessaloniki club were held to a 1-1 draw at Larissa.

THE MATCH

Having managed a goal blitz in the match against Panetolikos last time out, Martins’ had asked his players for more of the same. And they responded in kind with a powerful first-half display against the “Akrites”.

It took just 16 minutes for Guilherme to get on the scoresheet twice, the first coming in the 10th minute as the Brazilian headed in a Fortounis corner, and the second six minutes later as he side-footed home from Omar’s cross with a shell-shocked Xanthi struggling to contain the in-form home side.

Omar made it 3-0 just a minute before half-time, nodding home the rebound into an open goal after Mady Camara’s piledriver came back to him off Zivko Zivkovic’s post.

Guilherme, who had been relatively quiet since his early two-goal salvo, then turned provider after 57 minutes to set up Fortounis, who controlled well before scoring with a cool finish.

Omar could have made it 5-0 after 68 minutes but after he was picked out superbly by Gil Dias’ brilliant pass, Zivkovic came out on top in a one--on-one with the Norwegian defender.
