Olympic torch relay called off

After getting underway on Thursday, the Greek leg of the 2020 Olympic torch relay has since been suspended and will no longer take place.

While the torch lighting ceremony was closed to the public (due to the coronavirus pandemic) for the first time since 1984, the torch relay will now not be completed. The Olympic torch was set to visit 37 cities and towns throughout Greece, but only ended up visiting eight places in the Peloponnese (not including Olympia, where the torch was first lit) before the route was discontinued.

Following the torch’s visit to Sparta on Friday, the torch went straight to the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens. The torch will still be handed off to the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee at a special ceremony there on Thursday, as scheduled.

Organizers are still hopeful that this year’s Summer Olympics will still take place as planned, from July 24 to August 9 in Tokyo, Japan.
