Omonoia are the leaders going into the Christmas break following a 3-2 win at home to AEK Larnaca at the GSP Stadium in Nicosia. Jordi Gomez drew an early penalty, and drew first blood when he finished his own play off. AEK responded through Thomas Ioannou, but their joy was short-lived as Andronikos Kakkoulis quickly restored the Omonoia advantage.

Kakkoulis then set up an insurance goal for Thiago early in the second half. AEK rallied late, and Nacho Cases got them within one, but Omonoia held them off in the end.

Omonoia lead at the Christmas break by one point over Anorthosis who have a game in hand. AEK for their part fall into sixth place, hanging onto the last playoff spot by just one point over seventh place Nea Salamina.

THE MATCH

Omonoia got off to a fast start and their early pressure led to Jordi Gomez getting clipped in the box for a penalty. Gomez took the penalty himself and though Tono Ramirez dove the right way, it was a good enough penalty to beat him, and the fourth minute penalty made it 1-0 for Omonoia.

Omonoia continued to carry the play throughout the first half. That’s why it was a bit of a shock when AEK got the equalizer. Facundo Garcia played a through ball for Thomas Ioannou, and he got the carom off the inside of the post, making it 1-1 in the 32nd minute.

Omonoia got the lead right back just four minutes later. Thiago found Jan Lecjaks who did well to stay onside and he found Andronikos Kakkoulis who buried it past Ramirez. Omonoia took that 2-1 lead into the halftime break.

Six minutes into the second half, Omonoia picked up where they left off. Eric Bautheac crossed in for Kakkoulis. Kakkoulis made an unbelievable bicycle kick, which was met by an even better save by the Spanish keeper, but the AEK defense was nowhere to be found, and Thiago was right there to cash in on the rebound, making it 3-1.

AEK got themselves some late hope in the 80th minute. Lluis Sastre struck a free kick that Fabiano was able to turn aside, but the Omonoia defense couldn’t clear the ball, and Nacho Cases found the back of the net, halving the AEK deficit.

AEK had one more chance through Hector Hevel, but his attempt sailed over the net, and Omonoia hung on for a 3-2 win at home to AEK Larnaca.
