Matt Derbyshire needed less than three minutes to find the back of the net, and that goal was enough for Omonoia to defeat AEL Limassol. As a result, Omonoia moved back into first place, albeit with some teams having games in hand. AEL remain in third place.

Omonoia are now unbeaten in four league matches.

THE MATCH

Omonoia hosted AEL Limassol at the GSP Stadium in Nicosia. With the match barely more than two minutes old, Omonoia earned a free kick from the flank. Jordi Gomez played it into the box, just beyond the reach of the AEL keeper Vozinha, and Matt Derbyshire was there to pound it home. Derbyshire did well to stay onside and was all too happy to finish off the play.

Scary moments followed for AEL when Thiago was about to latch onto a through ball and Vozinha raced out of his net to meet him. However, all he could manage to do was bat it away as Thiago regained possession of the ball, but thankfully for AEL the attack fizzled out.

Eric Bautheac later fired a free kick that screamed off the near post. Derbyshire then set up a great chance for Vitor Gomes, with Vozinha pulling off a smart save.

AEL knew they would need more of the ball in the second half. They earned a free kick from around the same position as the one that led to the Omonoia goal. Adnan Aganovic struck it and found his intended target, Ivan Carlos, but his header careened off the bar. Later, they had another chance at working the same play from the opposite flank, but once again the finish wasn’t there as Andre Teixeira skied his header over the net.

Gevorg Ghazaryan had a go from distance, but Fabiano sprawled out and made the save. Chances continued appearing for both teams, but Omonoia were able to run out the clock and earn another attention-grabbing 1-0 win.
