Panathinaikos continue playoff push with away win

Panathinaikos finally managed to win their second away match of the 2018/2019 EuroLeague season, as the Athenians defeated Gran Canaria 99:80 on Thursday evening.

Playing against the second from bottom team in the standings, it was a golden opportunity for the Greens to pick up their second away win of the campaign, and they duly obliged with a confident performance in Spain. However, playoff rivals Armani Milano, Maccabi Tel-Aviv and Baskonia also managed to win their respective matches on Thursday, meaning Panathinaikos remain in 11th place after 24 rounds. The Greeks next travel to Darussafaka in Turkey on March 3.

Panathinaikos immediately took the initiative against Gran Canaria, building up a 50:45 advantage after the first half. In the second, the Trifylli continued bossing proceedings, with the team winning each of the remaining two quarters. The fourth was particularly impressive as Panathinaikos outscored their struggling opponents 26:14.

Keith Langford led Panathinaikos in scoring with 18 points, while Nick Calathes (17), Thanasis Antetokounmpo (16), Georgios Papagiannis (14) and Ioannis Papapetrou (10) also reached double figures. Calathes tallied nine assists as he continued his excellent run of form.

On Sunday, Panathinaikos will take on Rethymno in the Basket League as they return to domestic action for the weekend.
