Panathinaikos finally pay Wemmer while Piempongsant arrives in Athens

Flailing Athenian giants Panathinaikos eased relegation fears by finally paying off Jens Wemmer, while Thai businessman Pairoj Piempongsant arrived in Athens to begin talks of a takeover.

Watch LIVE from AGONAsport.com AEK's date with history as they look to become European Champions against AS Monaco in the FIBA Champions League FINAL on Sunday, May 6th.

For months on end, Panathinaikos have been dragged through the courts by former player Jens Wemmer, who was owed around 450,000 euros. Panathinaikos were on the verge of losing a third set of three points, something which would have seen the historic capital club relegated from the Super League, but the Prasini finally paid up on Friday. With Wemmer receiving his money in full, the German’s legal team are expected to withdraw their appeal, meaning that Panathinaikos don’t have to worry about relegation. Nevertheless, the initial six points deducted for the Wemmer incident will not return to Panathinaikos under any circumstances.

During the week, Panathinaikos received more positive news when Super League clubs voted in favour of abolishing the relegation punishment for teams without a licence to compete in the championship.

At the same time, Thai businessman Pairoj Piempongsant made his long-awaited trip to Athens, flying in to enter talks surrounding Pan Asia’s takeover of Panathinaikos. When arriving at Athens Airport on Friday evening, Piempongsant hastily exited the building, unwilling to talk with journalists. Tomorrow, on Saturday, he will hold a crucial meeting with Giannis Alafouzos concerning the possibility of becoming Panathinaikos’ new majority shareholder.
