Even if it doesn’t rain, it still seems to pour for Panathinaikos, as the Greens hit a new low on Sunday evening with a poor 3-2 defeat at Levadiakos in their delayed matchday 17 clash.

After the initial fixture was abandoned just 10 minutes in due to a waterlogged pitch 24 hours earlier, Levadiakos dispatched Marinos Ouzounidis’ struggling team thanks to goals from Joa Francisco (21), Mohammed Youssouf (36) and Pavlos Mitropoulos (50).

Finland midfielder Robin Lod pulled a goal back for Panathinaikos with their first real clear chance in the 76th-minute, and Lucas Villafanez added another in the fourth minute of added time from the penalty spot.

But although those strikes narrowed the margin of defeat, they could not mask a poor performance overall another miserable night for PAO.

Despite starting the match well and hitting the woodwork through Christos Donis after just eight minutes, it was all downhill for the Trifylli after that against Jose Anigo’s impressive home side at the Levadia Municipal Stadium.

In all fairness, Levadiakos have surprised many with their league form this season, but still it was a match the Greens were expected to win having kicked off 2018 with two successive league and Greek cup victories.

But Panathinaikos were second best all over the pitch, struggling to get their game plan going as the home side managed to find their rhythm and tempo, as well as gaps in a poor visiting defence.

Panathinaikos will point to their club’s well-documented financial struggles as a heavy distraction for the players, but such excuses will fall on the deaf ears of fans who will find such a defeat hard to take.

The result means Levadiakos move up to ninth, while the Greens are now languishing down in 10th place with just 19 points - a total of 18 points adrift of leaders AEK and second-placed PAOK.
