Nearly two years since his passing, Panathinaikos have paid tribute to their former owner and president, Pavlos Giannakopoulos, with the release of a documentary about Giannakopoulos’ life-story.

A successful businessman in the pharmaceutical industry, Giannakopoulos and his brother Thanasis took over operations at Panathinaikos BC, for what would be the start of a golden era for the Trifylli.

Pavlos served as president of the club from 1987 through to 2000 before sharing the title as co-president from 2003 to 2012. Panathinaikos ended up winning 13 titles during Giannakopoulos’ tenure at the helm of the club, as well as nine Greek Cups. But perhaps the accomplishment he was most proud of was the club’s success in European competition, which led to six EuroLeague titles between 1996 and 2011.

Panathinaikos remain under the ownership of the Giannakopoulos family in the form of Pavlos’ son Dimitris, who is determined to continue his father’s and his uncle’s legacy.

The documentary lasts roughly an hour and features interviews with members of Giannakopoulos’ family, current and former players, coaches, and fans.
