Marinos Ouzounidis’ Greens were below par for long spells against their opponents from Nea Smyrni, who took all three points thanks to Albanian forward Fiorin Durmishaj’s 73rd-minute strike.

While Panathinaikos have not exactly set the SuperLeague alight of late with their form, this was Panionios’ first win in five matches after a barren run which saw Michalis Grigoriou’s team slip down the table.

The win lifts Panionios up to fifth place with 19 points from 13 matches, while Panathinaikos remain unmoved down in eighth place, 11 points adrift of current leaders Olympiacos.

The crucial moment came 17 minutes from full-time when Panathinaikos’ Portuguese defender Nuno Reis inadvertently played the ball through the legs of fellow defender Dimitrios Kolovetsios.

The ball ran into the path of Durmishaj, who composed himself before clinically dispatching a shot past Greens goalkeeper Sokratis Dioudis.

Chances were few and far between with Panathinaikos especially anaemic after the goal went in, surrendering in limp fashion after a 20-match unbeaten run at their ‘Leoforos’ home.
