Panathinaikos to Sign Foreign Striker as a Free Agent

Panathinaikos to Sign Foreign Striker as a Free Agent

Panathinaikos failed to bring in a foreign striker on Deadline Day (as part of the only foreign signing they are allowed to make) and as a result, Technical Director Nikos Dabizas has turned his attention to free agents who can be signed at any time up until the 14th of September, even though the transfer window has officially ended.

Dabizas made this clear on Friday afternoon when it became apparent the Greens would not land anyone in time. Icelandic international Kolbeinn Sigthorsson appeared to be a late option after he was linked on Thursday. He has a great 1 goal every 2 games record for Iceland and possessed a decent pedigree. However, since then developments have emerged and it is not good news for Panathinaikos. Nantes has declined to give him a release in order to sign with the Trifylli and he will remain in France.

Consequently, Dabizas has turned his attention elsewhere. 27 year old Italian striker Federico Macheda is still the frontrunner. The former Manchester United man is a free agent after being released by Novara and reports suggest as the days pass, he will be the one tasked with leading the line for Panathinaikos.

Ivory Coast international striker Lacina Traore is another who possesses a good pedigree and has been on the radar. He has also been released by Monaco and can sign with the Greens, however, there could be other names that may enter the fray.

Multiple players depart

Meanwhile, several players departed the Trifylli on Deadline Day with Dabizas keen to trim the squad. Sotiris Pispas joined Volos NFC on a free transfer, Theodoros Mingos has moved to Olympiakos Nicosia as a free agent as well. In both cases, Panathinaikos have retained a resale fee.

Winger Dimos Chantzaras was signed on a 2 year deal after succeeding in his summer-long trial with the Greens from Anagennisi Karditsa but was immediately loaned out to Sparti. Antonis Oikonomopoulos and Giorgos Angelopoulos joined him moving to Sparti. Thanasis Dimitroulas was sent out on loan to Aiginiakos.
