On Wednesday, Panionios released this following statement:

“Panionios FC announces the signing of a contract with Leonidas Vokolos. The Greek specialist, coming back to the Panionios family, returns as the head coach. He was a member, and the captain, of the 1998 golden team which won the Greek Cup.”

Vokolos, 49, shared his emotions from joining Panionios:

“I want to thank the management for giving me this opportunity. When a team which you served for 18 years asks for your help, you have to say yes. I believe that we will fight to the end, regardless of the state of play. We will approach each separate game individually. I would also like to thank Olympiacos Volos for the mutual understanding and cooperation.”

Nikki Papavasiliou had earlier left Panionios in favour of Wadi Degla in Egypt.

Until joining Panionios, Vokolos was managing Olympiacos Volos in the Football League, however there was a clause in his contract which allowed him to leave if a Super League club came calling. Vokolos had initially started the 2019/2020 season with AOK Kerkyra in the Super League 2.

Vokolos had made over 200 appearances for Panionios as a player between 1986 and 1998.

At the moment, Panionios are rooted to the foot of the Super League table, with only 10 points on the board from 25 games.
