Christos Almpanis was the hero for Apollon Smyrnis on Sunday after the young Greek striker scored a brace in a resounding 3-0 win over Larissa which helped the SuperLeague strugglers climb out of the relegation zone, while Kerkyra slipped into the place in the danger area after recording a 0-0 home draw against Lamia.

Almpanis netted twice in the second half, after 66 and 72 minutes, to add to Emmanuel Kone’s earlier goal in the first half as Georgios Paraschos’ team picked up only their fourth win of the season to boost their chances of staying in the top flight.

The victory means Apollon, who have been struggling in the bottom two places for the large part of the season, are now in 14th place, two points ahead of Kerkyra.

Meanwhile in Kerkyra, the home side simply could not find a way past an inspired Lamia goalkeeper Nikos Papadopoulos, who time and again bailed out his team with a number of fine saves to preserve the 0-0 scoreline.

Lamia, who are also just about treading water above the drop zone, had clearly set up their stall to defend and secure a draw against their relegation rivals, and they had Papadopoulos to thank as they achieved it.

The Lamia custodian seemed to have endless energy and made an especially fine stop from Denis Epstein in the 75th minute when the German midfielder looked set to score.

As such, the point yielded means Lamia stay four points above the drop zone in 13th spot with 25 points, while Kerkyra are now 15th with 21 points.
