In recent days, the Attica region has been hit by huge fires, with the flames taking over stricken villages and their desperate inhabitants. So far, the official death toll has reached 74, but that is expected to rise even further. One of the worst hit places was Mati, a small village located 25 miles north-east of Athens where 26 adults and children were sadly found dead in close proximity. Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has declared three days of national mourning as the authorities try to somehow battle the blaze with assistance from other countries.

As a result of the terrible events in Attica, PAOK owner Ivan Savvidis declared that all ticketing proceedings raised from the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round home match against Basel will be donated to the victims. The Russian-Greek businessman also instructed his associates to rent Attica hotels in order to house those who have seen their homes destroyed.

Additionally, a request was made to UEFA asking for permission to hold a minute’s silence before the match against Basel at the Toumba Stadium in memory of the dead and for the players to wear black armbands.

Evangelos Marinakis, supremo of Olympiacos, has sent one million euros to the victims on behalf of the Piraeus club, while opening special accounts with Piraeus Bank, Ethniki Trapeza and Alpha Bank for the public to contribute with their own donations.
