Despite making a handful of promising signings midway through the campaign, PAOK have continued to suffer plenty of defeats across all competitions, with the Dikefalos tou Vorra currently languishing at the bottom of the Basket League and having been knocked out of the Basketball Champions League. At the weekend, PAOK contrived to lose against Kolossos Rodou at home in a crucial match in their battle for survival, a result which promoted Charalampidis to announce his resignation from the position of head coach.

Initially, the PAOK management did not want to let Charalampidis go, but the 43-year-old insisted on leaving. Charalampidis was subsequently absent from the team’s training session on Monday.

Stathis Nerantzakis and Babis Karaiskos will coach the team until a permanent replacement is appointed.

According to the latest reports, PAOK are eager to hire either Thanasis Skourtopoulos or  Soulis Markopoulos as a replacement for Charalampidis. Markopoulos, 70, previously coached PAOK on several occasions, while Skourtopoulos is still employed as the coach of the senior Greek national team by the Hellenic Basketball Federation. It has already been confirmed that Rick Pitino will be the manager of Greece for the Olympic qualification tournament.

PAOK return to Basket League action on February 29 against Ifaistos Limnou on the road. They did manage to defeat Bonn 103-84 in Thessaloniki on Tuesday, their concluding match of the Basketball Champions League regular season. PAOK finished in seventh place of Group D with five wins from 14 games.
