PAOK hindered by Financial Fair Play problems

PAOK, who are in danger of receiving serious punishments from UEFA for breaking Financial Fair Play rules, aren’t expected to be overly active in the summer transfer window.

The Dikefalos tou Vorra aren’t enjoying a particular positive 2020. In early March, the reigning Greek champions received a heavy seven-point deduction in the Super League for their involvement in a multi-ownership scandal with Xanthi, meaning they now trail league leaders Olympiacos by a large 14 points. In the January transfer window, PAOK didn’t sign any players due to the Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules, and it now seems that the Thessaloniki-outfit are in danger of receiving a damaging punishment from UEFA.

Recently, Manchester City were suspended from European competitions for the 2020/2021 season as a result of breaking FFP regulations, and there is a possibility that PAOK will be penalised in the same way. The PAOK management is aware of the danger.

PAOK could even be forced into selling the likes of Dimitris Giannoulis and Dimitris Limnios.

Taking into account the state of play, PAOK are unlikely to be overly active during the summer transfer period, however they are eager to lower the average age of a somewhat aging squad. In addition, there is uncertainty concerning the future of head coach Abel Ferreira, who has received plenty of criticism throughout what has been a testing campaign for PAOK. Certain reports have even suggested that FFP is the only thing preventing PAOK from sacking Ferreira.

Players from the under 19 team, which won the junior Super League title for the third consecutive time, are predicted to be introduced to the senior side during the upcoming pre-season training camps.

The main aim for the remainder of the 2019/2020 season, when it eventually resumes after the coronavirus pandemic has finally passed, is qualifying for the UEFA Champions League. Third-placed AEK, in great shape with Massimo Carrera at the helm, are only one point behind.
