Back-to-back Greek Basket League titles has helped Xavi Pascual land a second straight Greek Basket League Best Coach honour, the Hellenic Basketball Clubs Association (HEBA) announced on Tuesday.

Pascual steered Panathinaikos to a remarkable 26-0 campaign in the regular season before guiding the Trifylli to a 3-2 series win in the Basket League Final over archrival Olympiacos.

Pascual, who arrived at Panathinaikos in 2016, is entering the final year of his three-year contract with the Greek Champions and already has three team honours to his name with a Greek Cup to boot.

With the announcement, Pascual becomes the second coach to repeat as winner of the award since HEBA began honouring coaches for their efforts during the 1997/1998 season. Although there are several coaches to have won the award on multiple occasions, including former Panathinaikos coach Zeljko Obradovic who is a four-time winner, previously only the inaugural winner, Slobodan Subotic, had been able to win the award in back-to-back seasons with Panathinaikos in 1997/1998 and 1998/1999.

HEBA revealed that Pascual beat out PAOK’s Ilias Papatheodorou and Promitheas’ Makis Giatras for the award as the Spaniard finished atop the voting done by both his peers and the fans. Giatras, who led Promtheas to a third-place finish in the regular season and a first-ever European berth in the Basketball Champions League, received the most votes from media professionals while Pascual finished second.
