With football around Europe still on lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic, former Olympiacos and current Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder, Daniel Podence, held an ask-me-anything session on his personal Instagram account.

Having spent one-and-half seasons in Piraeus, Podence quickly became a favourite amongst Olympiacos supporters before his departure for Wolves in the most recent transfer window.

Replying to questions about anything from his favourite TV shows to his favourite Greek food, questions from his fans in Greece flooded Podence’s messages as the Portuguese midfielder reflected on his time in Piraeus.

Podence showed a lot of admiration towards his former employers as he named former teammates Omar Elabdellaoui, Ruben Semedo, and Kostas Tsimikas in a few of his replies.

Podence was even asked about who his favourite Olympiacos BC player is, to which he responded with a video of Vassilis Spanoulis in action at the Peace and Friendship Stadium.

Perhaps the most interesting response Podence offered was when he was asked about his thoughts on the best Greek footballer. Podence didn’t seem to hesitate in naming his former teammate, Kostas Fortounis, and even offered some insight into his former captain’s mentality and habits.

“In quality is ‘Forto.’ But he needs to change his mentality if [he] wants something more in his life. He has all the qualities of the big players… but very lazyyyyy. He knows that,” Podence replied on his Instagram story.

Fortounis suffered a devastating injury in preseason before making his return to first-team action midway through the season. A feud with manager Pedro Martins kept Fortounis out of the lineup for crucial matches against Arsenal and PAOK in the UEFA Europa League and Greek Cup, after Fortounis expressed his frustration with being left out of the starting lineup in a Super League clash with PAOK.

During the feud, Greek outlets like Gazzetta.gr also reported that Martins was reportedly demanding a lot from Fortounis in both games and training sessions, something that might have fueled Fortounis’ frustration to the point of lashing out at his manager.

Fortounis issued a public apology a couple of weeks after his outburst and was named as a substitute in the squad that drew 1-1 with Wolves in the first leg of the Europa League Round of 16 tie on 12 March.
