The selling of Daniel Podence to Wolverhampton continues a long tradition in the Marinakis era of Olympiacos pulling off big money transfers. AGONAsport takes a closer look.

The January transfer window saw Olympiacos engage in another piece of profitable business with the selling of Portuguese winger Daniel Podence to English Premier League side Wolves. Podence’s move was the latest in a series of big money transfers that the Piraeus side has engaged in since Evangelos Marinakis took over the club in 2010.

The transfer, concluded late in the winter window after a period of intense speculation, saw Olympiacos seal a deal that brought in roughly €20 million for a player who was purchased last year for just a third of that amount.

This continues a long tradition in the Marinakis era of Olympiacos pulling off big money transfers for players bought for a fraction of the cost or young talents who have come through the club’s academy system. In fact, the reigning Greek Super League 1 leaders have made sales of players totaling over  €200 million since Marinakis took over the club a decade ago.

Of course, this is a cycle that allows Olympiacos to continue doing just this. They are a selling club to some of Europe’s top leagues which means that big money comes into the club. This in turn allows the team to stay competitive both in Greece and also in continental play with yearly presence in the Champions’ League or the Europa League.

Below is a list of some of the top players sales Olympiacos have made in the last decade:

  1. Panagiotis Retsos to Bayer Leverkusen (2017) -  €22 million

  2. Daniel Podence to Wolves (2020) - €19.6 million

  3. Kostas Mitroglou to Fulham (2014) - €15.2 million

  4. Luka Milivojevic to Crystal Palace (2017) - €15.1 million)

  5. Kostas Manolas to Roma (2013) - €13 million

  6. Brown Ideye to Tianjin Teda (2017) - €12 million

  7. Andreas Samaris to Benfica (2014) - €10 million

  8. Kevin Mirallas to Everton (2012) - €7.65 million

  9. Arthur Masuaku to West Ham (2016) - €7.1 million

  10. Alan Pulido to Chivas (2016) - €6 million
