Olympiacos are 8-2 on the season following a 72-64 win over Valencia Basket on Thursday night. A double-double from Georgios Printezis and a solid performance from Kostas Papnikolaou steered the Piraeus giants to victory in Spain, which sees the Erythrolefki put pressure on CSKA Moscow in the race for top spot.

Printezis, who made his 236th EuroLeague appearance, also notched two personal bests on the night as he continues to be a driving force for Yiannis Sfairopoulos’ side. Printezis 14 rebounds was the highest he has reached in EuroLeague competition, while his 7 offensive rebounds is also a personal best.

Valencia, who slumped to 3-7 with the defeat, were led by Erick Green who scored 26 points in first meeting with Olympiacos since leaving the club for the Spanish port in the summer.

Olympiacos took a seven-point lead in the opening quarter, before a tight second frame saw Valencia cut the lead to just five points by halftime. Olympiacos would stretch their lead to nine points by the third quarter, seemingly putting the game out of reach for Valencia as the Spanish side struggled to breakdown Olympiacos’ stingy defense.

Olympiacos will await to see if CSKA Moscow can join them atop the EuroLeague standings, but the Piraeus giants will have a chance to push for a 9-2 record when they face Valencia’s domestic rivals Real Madrid next week. Valencia, meanwhile, will look to make inroads on turning around their season in Israel against Maccabi Fox Tel Aviv.
