Promitheas finished the Basket League regular season in fourth place and matched up against the fifth seeded PAOK in the quarter-finals of the playoffs. The Patra side had no problem sweeping the Thessalonikis to advance to the semi-finals of the playoffs and as a result, secured their spot in next year’s Basketball Champions League.

However, the club’s administration has openly expressed their desire to give up their place in the Basketball Champions League and compete in the EuroCup. The Champions League is organized by FIBA whereas the EuroCup is organized by the EuroLeague Basketball company. The EuroCup is the EuroLeague’s second tier competition behind the EuroLeague itself.

According to sportfm.gr, Promitheas have sent a letter to the EuroCup regarding their participation in next year’s competition. Greece is allocated one place in the EuroCup and Promitheas could very well take it.

However, the Hellenic Basketball Federation (EOK) has stated that sanctions will be imposed on any team that competes in a competition not organized by FIBA, with the exception of Panathinaikos and Olympiacos, who have a ten-year contract with the EuroLeague. Despite the EOK’s stance, the federation does not have set regulations or punishments in place if a team where to compete in the EuroCup.

If Promitheas do compete in the EuroCup, their place in the Basketball Champions League will be taken by the next best Greek side, PAOK. The Thessalonikis, however, are in a financial crises and will likely withdraw from any European competitions. Thus, Ifaistos Limnou or Holargos will be awarded a place in the Champions League with the latter already expressing their willingness to compete at the continental level.
