Retsos set for Sheffield United move

Panagiotis Retsos is expected to shortly complete his loan move to Sheffield United from Bayer Leverkusen for the remainder of the 2019/2020 season.

Retsos, 21, moved to Bayer Leverkusen from Olympiacos in the summer of 2017. However, while the gifted defender has regularly shown flashes of his undoubted talent, he has struggled with numerous injury problems and hasn’t been able to hold down a place in the Leverkusen team this season. In the current campaign, Retsos has only made a grand total of six appearances for Leverkusen across all competitions, and it now appears that he will continue his career at Sheffield United.

Sheffield United earned promotion to the English Premier League last season. The Blades currently sit in eighth place of the standings with 33 points from 24 games.

According to reports, Sheffield will play Leverkusen 700,000 euros to loan Retsos for the second half of the season, and they will have the option to purchase the versatile Greek defender on a permanent basis in the summer. Transfermarkt rates Retsos’ value at nine million.

Sheffield United are due to make an announcement tomorrow.

Retsos had also been linked Genoa and Cagliari. At one point, there was a possibility of Retsos returning to Olympiacos, but the player himself revealed that he wants to continue playing abroad.

He has competed in five matches for the senior Greek national team.
