On Sunday afternoon, Rizespor hosted Alanyaspor in the Super Lig, but the main talking point certainly wasn’t the football. When the teams lined up to listen to the national anthem, Rizespor players and coach Unal Karaman were dressed in military uniform, displaying their support of the Turkish Army. Alanyaspor, who are in sixth position of the table have Greek nationals Georgios Tzavellas, Manolis Siopis and Tasos Bakasetas on their roster.

Both Tzavellas and Bakasetas were included in the starting line-up to face Rizespor. Siopis, however, missed the game.

Recently, Turkey rapidly began pushing thousands of immigrants to the border with Greece, arming them with tear gas and other objects in order to injure Hellenic forces defending their territory. In response, the Greek government has repeatedly stated that illegal immigrants will not be granted entry to the country, but this has not prevented them from continuing to violently try and move into Europe.

The game between Rizespor and Alanyaspor ended in a 1-1 draw. In the centre of defence, Tzavellas played the entire 90 minutes, whereas attacking midfielder Bakasetas was replaced in the 73rd minute of play.
