On Friday, the Athenian club released this following statement:

“Panathinaikos FC announces the signing of a two-year contract with Technical Director, Mr. Xavi Roca.”

Roca, 45, replaces Nikos Dabizas in the role after the latter was sacked in October.

The Spaniard previously worked as the Technical Director of CE Sabadell (2011-2013) and AEK Larnaca (2014-2018). During his four years in Cyprus, Roca enjoyed plenty of success with AEK, notably winning the Cypriot Cup in the 2017/2018 campaign and participating in the qualification rounds of the UEFA Europa League.

The former right-back, who rose through the ranks at local club Barcelona, went on to have a long playing career with various teams such as Villarreal, Espanyol and Rayo Vallecano. Roca hung up his boots in 2010.

Roca’s first task at Panathinaikos will be identifying transfer targets for the winter. Panathinaikos currently occupy eighth place of the Super League table with 12 points from 10 games.
