After failing to clinch a berth for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo at this past summer’s FIBA World Cup, Greece are among the 24 teams chasing the final four spots via the Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

The Ethniki will discover their rivals for next summer’s qualifying tournament as well the location for their qualifying tournament when the draw for the four mini-tournaments is held on 27 November.

Greece are among the top seeds for the qualifying tournament along with Serbia, Lithuania, and Russia. The Serbs and Lithuanians will be hosting their own qualifying tournaments in Belgrade and Kaunas respectively, meaning that Greece will be headed to either Canada (Victoria, British Columbia) or Croatia (Zagreb) for their qualifying tournament.

Newly appointed head coach, Rick Pitino, will be in the Ethniki hot seat for this tournament as he prepares to take over from Thanasis Skourtopoulos for Greece’s Olympics push.

The Ethniki will be hoping to qualify for their first Olympics since Beijing 2008. In both 2012 and 2016, Greece fell short of the final tournament after failing to navigate the final qualifying tournament. In total, Greece have only qualified for four Olympics and just three when excluding the automatic qualification when Athens hosted the Olympics in 2004.

The Olympic Qualifying Tournaments are scheduled to be hosted from 23-28 June, with the winner of each tournament earning passage to the Olympics later that summer.
