This weekend, AEK, Olympiacos and Panathinaikos were all held to draws by Lamia, Volos NFC and Aris respectively, with the three matches in question ending 0-0. Interestingly, this is the first matchday in 60 years when the trio have all picked up draws in their respective matches, without a single goal being scored in any of the games. Of course, there have been plenty of occasions during that period when AEK, Olympiacos and Panathinaikos have all drawn in one particular round of the championship, but one goal had always been scored in at least one of the matches. This statistic does not include derby matches between the three organisations.

Naturally, AEK were disappointed and frustrated with the 0-0 draw against a stubborn Lamia outfit, but this was the second clean sheet in three matches under the leadership of Massimo Carrera. AEK, occupying third place of the standings, trail leaders PAOK by a large 12 points.

INCREDIBLE PAOK UNDEFEATED RUN CONTINUES

51 matches undefeated and counting. Hosting Atromitos at the Toumba Stadium, PAOK flexed their attacking muscles in an emphatic manner, thumping their visitors 5-1 to move two points clear at the top of the table.

Incredibly, the reigning Greek champions have now gone unbeaten throughout one entire calendar year in the Super League, with the overall statistic now standing at 51 consecutive league matches without defeat. PAOK’s last loss in the championship was suffered in March 2018 against Asteras in Tripoli.

PAOK need to avoid defeat in their next seven Super League games to match Olympiacos’ record from 1974.

In 2019, PAOK competed in 32 league matches, claiming 25 victories and seven draws.

OFI FLYING HIGH

In Agrinio, OFI suffered a surprise 2-0 defeat to struggling Panetolikos, with both of the goals having arrived in the concluding 12 minutes. Nevertheless, despite the loss, OFI still remain in fourth place of the table after Aris and Panathinaikos could only play to a 0-0 draw at the Olympic Stadium.

OFI are in the top four of the domestic championship at Christmas for the first time in 20 years. In 1999, OFI were in fourth place for the winter break, and they eventually finished the campaign in the same position with 63 points from 34 games.

However, if OFI are to remain among the big hitters in the current campaign, their away form will have to improve. The Cretans have conceded six defeats in eight away matches.

INGASON SCORING FOR FUN

Initially, Sverrir Ingi Ingason failed to make an impact at PAOK when he transferred from Rostov in January, but the 26-year-old has eventually been rewarded for his patience.

In the 2019/2020 Super League, Ingason has become a key player for PAOK in the centre of defence, forming a solid partnership with Jose Angel Crespo. He’s been a real threat in the opposing box too, scoring a grand total of four goals in 11 appearances. His two goals against Atromitos on Monday evening helped PAOK ease to a comfortable 5-1 triumph over Atromitos in Thessaloniki.

Ingason is the leading Super League scorer among defenders. Daniel Suarez of Asteras Tripolis is in second place with three goals to his name.
