UNSTOPPABLE OLYMPIACOS

Olympiacos simply cannot be stopped. On Sunday evening, the Erythrolefki claimed their second consecutive league win against PAOK at the Toumba Stadium, emerging victorious by a score of 1-0 with Youssef El Arabi thumping home the only goal of the game in the first half. Olympiacos are now 17 points clear in first position as they close in on their maiden Super League title since 2017.

Pedro Martins’ troops are still unbeaten this season. As it stands, Olympiacos have won 21 of their 27 Super League games in the 2019/2020 campaign, drawing the remaining six. Overall, the Piraeus giants haven’t lost a single game in the championship since February 2019, with the undefeated streak currently standing at 37 matches (31 wins, six draws). Olympiacos are aiming to match Panathinaikos’ and PAOK’s record of winning the league without any defeats.

The fact that Olympiacos have only conceded nine goals in 27 league matches speaks volumes about their defensive reliability. Incredibly, Olympiacos haven’t conceded a goal away from home in the Super League since November 23, when Dimitris Emmanouilidis struck an equaliser for Panionios in Nea Smyrni.

Olympiacos have since played on the road against Panetolikos, Asteras Tripolis, Volos NFC, Lamia, OFI, AEK, Atromitos and PAOK - twice - without conceding.

LIVAJA FINALLY SCORES IN DERBY AGAIN

Marko Livaja hadn’t scored in any major Greek derby in 931 days. However, the talented Croatian forward finally ended that unwanted streak on Sunday, as he tallied the equalising goal against Panathinaikos at the Olympic Stadium for AEK. The 1-1 draw didn’t allow AEK to overtake PAOK into second spot of the Super League standings.

Nevertheless, while AEK were certainly disappointed to miss out on the three points, it was an enjoyable evening for Livaja as he scored his first derby goal since the triumphant 2017/2018 season. Livaja hadn’t netted a marker in a derby following his two goals against PAOK and Panathinaikos in that particular campaign.

Interestingly, in the 28 games in which Livaja has scored, AEK have only conceded one defeat while earning three draws and 24 victories!

IMPROVING PANATHINAIKOS

Panathinaikos are continuing to develop. Despite the somewhat unsavoury situation concerning Giorgos Donis, the Prasini produced a solid showing against AEK at the OAKA, dictating the pace of the game and opening the scoring through Federico Macheda. In the end, Panathinaikos had to settle for a point after Livaja’s equaliser, but it was a promising display from Donis’ men.

The Athenians have been impressive in derby matches in the 2019/2020 Super League season. So far, Panathinaikos have only lost two games against AEK, Olympiacos and PAOK, winning two of three home matches. The two defeats were suffered in away games at Olympiacos and AEK during the regular season.
