OLYMPIACOS DERBY EXPERTS

Pending the verdict of a legal case involving PAOK in July, Olympiacos have won the domestic title for the 45th time in their history. Playing with confidence and slickness, the Erythrolefki had too much class for AEK at the Olympic Stadium, securing a 2-1 victory thanks to two first-half goals from Youssef El Arabi and Mohamed Camara. Olympiacos are an overwhelming 19 points clear of second-placed PAOK in the Super League standings.

Olympiacos’ superb derby form has been key to their title charge. Incredibly, in nine 2019/2020 Super League derbies against AEK, Panathinaikos and PAOK, the Piraeus giants have tallied six victories and three draws without conceding a single defeat! Furthermore, if we take into account Olympiacos’ Greek Cup semi-final with PAOK last week, the Thrylos have won three successive games against Panathinaikos (3-0), the Dikefalos tou Vorra (2-0) and AEK (2-1) in the space of seven days by a combined score of 7-1.

MARTINS CONTINUES OLYMPIACOS SUCCESS IN 100TH MATCH

Sunday marked an historic moment for Pedro Martins.

Since becoming the Olympiacos head coach in the summer of 2018, the 49-year-old Portuguese manager has been at the helm for 100 matches across all tournaments, recording 69 victories, 18 draws and 13 defeats with a positive goal difference of 205-70. Hugely popular among the Olympiacos fan base, Martins has been a real success story in Piraeus, taking the club deep into the UEFA Europa League knockout stages, winning the Super League for the first time in three years and qualifying for the final of the Greek Cup. He is under contract at Olympiacos until June 2022.

AEK STRUGGLING AT HOME

AEK’s home struggles continue. In truth, the Enosi produced perhaps the worst performance of the entire campaign during the first half with Olympiacos at the OAKA, defending woefully against their in-form opponents. To their credit, Massimo Carrera’s troops did recover in the second stanza, but it wasn’t enough to salvage a point.

So far, with four rounds of the competition in the books, AEK are yet to win at home in the Super League playoffs, drawing with Panathinaikos (1-1) and Aris (2-2) before falling to Olympiacos. The Kitrinomavri will need to beat OFI and PAOK in Athens if they are to have any hope of qualifying for the 2020/2021 UEFA Champions League.
