Sloukas in danger of missing World Cup

Sloukas in danger of missing World Cup

On Friday, Fenerbahce star Kostas Sloukas suffered a calf injury against Italy at the Acropolis Tournament, and he is now a major doubt for the upcoming 2019 FIBA World Cup in China.

Yesterday, Greece defeated Italy at the OAKA Indoor Hall with a confident performance, but it was marred by a calf injury suffered by Sloukas. The 29-year-old will miss all remaining preparation games ahead of the World Cup.

The severity of Sloukas’ condition will be analysed on Tuesday. A day later, the national team will travel to China for the World Cup, but Sloukas will remain in Greece for the time being in order to undergo his treatment program.

If the calf injury is not overly serious, Sloukas will join the team in China in the last few days of August. A positive sign is that Sloukas only strained his calf muscle rather than tearing it.

Gazzetta.gr reported that Sloukas is aiming to return to training on August 27.

The 2019 FIBA World Cup will take place between August 31 and September 15. Greece have been placed in Group F alongside Brazil, Montenegro and New Zealand.
