29-year old Sokratis Papastathopoulos, the commanding Borussia Dortmund centre-back, has strongly been linked with a summer move to Arsenal, with media reports suggesting the transfer costing around 18 million euros will be revealed in the near future. In an interview with Greek radio station Radiofono 24/7 88.6, his father Charalampos Papastathopoulos stated that Sokratis will undergo a medical at Arsenal on Tuesday morning, before penning a contract with the Gunners.

“At the moment, Sokratis is in England and tomorrow the process will be completed,” said Charalampos in his radio interview. “Personally, I think he is going to play at a higher level and he is happy about that. The English Premier League is the most competitive championship in the world and I believe he will perform well. His contract? It will be a 3+1 deal.”

Charalampos also went on to say that Sokratis could have joined Arsenal two years ago, but the transfer fell through: “Two years ago, Arsenal wanted to sign Sokratis, but I don’t know why the deal didn’t happen. Right now, a major reason behind Sokratis moving to England is the fact that he only has one year remaining on his Borussia Dortmund contract.”

Interestingly, Charalampos confirmed reports that Manchester United wanted to acquire Sokratis’ services, however the centre-back chose to become an Arsenal player instead: “There was also interest from Manchester United, a club which have a good relationship with Borussia. Nevertheless, Sokratis chose Arsenal.”

Looking to the future, Sokratis might return home to Greece after a few years in the English Premier League: “Sokratis will spent three or four years with Arsenal,” claimed Charalampos. “After that, I don’t know if he will return to Greece or play elsewhere. He started his career at AEK so they have an advantage in wanting to sign him later on.”

During the 2017/2018 season, Sokratis Papastathopoulos participated in 30 Bundesliga matches, scoring two goals along the way. According to Transfermarkt, his market value is rated at 22 million.
