Sokratis helps Arsenal to victory over United

Sokratis Papastathopoulos registered Arsenal’s second goal in their 2-0 win over Manchester United on Wednesday.

Arsenal and Sokratis Papastathopoulos began 2020 in style as the Gunners defeated Manchester United 2-0 in Wednesday’s Premier League action. After Nicolas Pepe put Arsenal ahead in the eighth minute, it was Sokratis Papastathopoulos’ turn to strike three minutes before the half-time whistle.

The Greek center-back was in the right place at the right time to smash home a volley from close range after Lacazette’s header from Pepe’s corner was denied by De Gea. It was Sokratis’ second goal of the season for the London side.

Arsenal, who dominated play in the first half and did well to hold onto their lead after the restart, recorded their first home win in league play since October 6, a 1-0 result over Bournemouth. Arsenal have struggled greatly this season and currently occupy 10th place in the EPL standings. The Gunners will hope under new boss Mikel Arteta that things will drastically improve in 2020 and Wednesday’s victory will surely boost the club’s morale.

Arsenal have been paired to play Olympiacos in the UEFA Europa League Round of 32. The first leg will be held in Greece on February 20 with the return leg scheduled for one week later in London.
