Given that Greece and Spain are two of the top teams in the sport, this Group C encounter was highly anticipated. Both teams are former world champions, with Greece having won in 2011 and Spain in 2013. At the last World Championships in 2017, Spain finished in second place, while Greece came seventh overall. In that tournament, Spain defeated Greece on penalties in the quarterfinals. However, Greece got their revenge at the 2018 European Championships in Barcelona, defeating the Spaniards 11-9 in the semifinals.

Things would not go as planned for Georgios Morfesis’ side this time around, as the Spaniards got off to a strong start and never looked back. Spain led 6-1 after the first period of play, and 8-3 at halftime. The Spaniards then led 11-3 after the third period and ultimately won 14-4.

Spain’s Roser Tarrago Aymerich was the star of the match, leading her country with six goals. For Greece, Alexandra Asimaki, Nikoleta Eleftheriadou, Christina Tsoukala, and Eleni Xenaki each scored one goal.

Greece will look to get back on track on Tuesday, as they will take on Cuba. Cuba also lost their opener on Sunday, 9-6 to Kazakhstan, who Greece will face on Thursday.
