AEL struck first through Andrija Majdevac in the 18th minute, but Omonoia equalized through Eric Bautheac before the end of the first half.

As a result, Omonoia remain in second place, but now four points adrift of leaders Anorthosis, and just one point ahead of their third-placed archrivals APOEL. AEL, for their part, remain in sixth place, clinging to the final playoff spot by just three points.

THE MATCH

The two sides traded chances early on. Ryan Mmaee had a shot narrowly miss the far post, while Thiago looked to set up a redirect for Matt Derbyshire that the Englishman couldn’t connect on, resulting in a routine save for Vozinha. Omonoia wanted a penalty when Slobodan Medojevic bodied Babajide David Akintola off the ball without actually getting the ball. No call was given, and in fact Akintola nearly saw yellow for arguing.

AEL broke through in the 18th minute as Minas Antoniou put in a cross that found Andrija Majdevac who had an empty net to shoot at, having snuck behind Costel Pantilimon. Pantilimon protested for an offside call, but none was forthcoming and AEL had a 1-0 lead.

Majdevac came knocking for a second goal, but this time Pantilimon saw it all the way and made the save. At the other end, Omonoia found the equalizer. Akintola with the heads-up play found Jan Lecjaks who crossed in for Eric Bautheac who had just enough space to volley it past Vozinha, making the score 1-1 in the 41st minute, which remained the score at halftime.

In the second half, more two-way traffic. Mmaee turned on shot with a quick release, but Pantilimon made a strong save. Thiago caught Vozinha off his line and fed Derbyshire who went for the chip, but he overhit it and the keeper from Cape Verde was happy to see it airmailed over the bar. Adnan Aganovic struck a low free-kick that Pantilimon took care of. Omonoia had one last chance to win it off a stoppage-time corner, but Derbyshire’s header was off-target, and despite a bevy of chances in both directions, the 1-1 stalemate endured.
