Statistics make painful reading for Olympiacos

Despite battling performances, Olympiacos have failed to make a challenge in Group B of the UEFA Champions League, losing four out of five games and conceding a large amount of goals.

Matchday one suggested that Olympiacos were capable of making a realistic challenge for qualification to the Round of 16. However, since that dramatic 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur in Piraeus, Olympiacos have failed to pick up a single point as the Greeks contrived to concede four successive losses. Olympiacos are rooted to the foot of Group B with one point from five games; only Genk also have just the one point on the board in the tournament.

Interestingly, Olympiacos have been in a leading position in three of their four defeats. On Tuesday, the Erythrolefki were in dreamland as quick-fire goals from Youssef El Arabi and Ruben Semedo handed them a 2-0 advantage in London against Tottenham, but the English side subsequently responded with four answered goals to run out 4-2 winners. Olympiacos must now defeat Red Star Belgrade in Piraeus in the final group game to earn a berth in the Last 32 of the UEFA Europa League.

While Olympiacos have scored a respectable seven goals in the competition, their somewhat shaky defence has been far from solid. Overall, Olympiacos have conceded a grand total of 14 goals across the five matches, the third-worst record in this season’s Champions League. Only Genk - 16 goals - and Red Star - 19 goals - have conceded more. Yassine Meriah’s dreadful error for the maiden Tottenham marker in England was a perfect representation of Olympiacos’ defensive woes.

MISERABLE WINLESS STREAK CONTINUES

Olympiacos simply cannot get over the winning line. Incredibly, if we exclude all qualifying matches, the last time when Olympiacos, or any Greek club in fact, celebrated a victory in the Champions League was on November 4, 2015, as the Piraeus-based organisation defeated Dinamo Zagreb 2-1 at the Karaiskakis Stadium. Ever since that victory, Olympiacos have conceded a huge 11 defeats and tallied two draws in 13 Champions League games!
