Stefanos makes semifinals in Switzerland

Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas defeated Serbia’s Filip Krajinovic in three sets in the quarterfinals of the 2019 Swiss Indoors, and will now face world number three Roger Federer in his hometown tournament.

Tsitsipas began the week by defeating Spaniard Albert Ramos Vinolas (world number 42), 6-3 7-6 in the opening round. The 21-year-old from Athens then beat Lithuania’s Ricardas Berankis (world number 70), 6-7(4) 6-2 6-4 in the second round. Then, in the quarterfinals, Tsitsipas beat world number 46 Filip Krajinovic of Serbia, 3-6 6-4 6-4.

The Greek will now take on Roger Federer of Switzerland in the semifinals on Saturday. The world number three is looking to win his hometown event for the tenth time in his career. Federer is currently the two-time defending champion, and has lifted the trophy in Basel four of the last five years. The other semifinal will be between Australian wildcard Alex de Minaur, and American Reilly Opelka. It must also be noted that Opelka teamed up with fellow American Taylor Fritz in the doubles event here, where they defeated Tsitsipas and Wesley Koolhof of the Netherlands in the first round in straight sets.

Tsitsipas will be looking to reach his fourth career final at the ATP 500 level, having lost each of his previous three. The head-to-head between Federer and Tsitsipas is currently 1-1, though Federer also beat Tsitsipas at the Hopman Cup, which is not counted as an official match.
