Strong Olympiacos survive in Spain

Olympiacos came from behind to hold Barceloneta to an 11-11 draw in the LEN Champions League, as the visitors maintained their unbeaten record.

The Erythrolefki, who held a 5-0 record this season going into today’s match, were down 2-3 after the first period of play. The Greeks were then in serious danger of receiving their first loss of the season, as they found themselves trailing 4-7 at halftime. They were then able to slightly reduce Barceloneta’s lead to 7-9 after the third period.

Barceloneta went up 7-10 early in the fourth period, but three unanswered goals from the Greeks saw them level the score at 10-10. The Spaniards soon took a 10-11 lead, but Olympiacos once again came back, with the final score being 11-11.

Alexandros Gounas led Olympiacos offensively with four goals. Georgios Dervisis and Konstantinos Genidounias each added two goals as well.

Olympiacos now remain in first place out of eight teams in Group A, and will next play at home against second-placed Jug Dubrovnik on December 9. The two teams last faced each other back in February, when they played to a 10-10 draw in Greece during the group stage of the 2018-19 Champions League.
