Four games, three defeats. In what has been a turbulent start to the new season, Olympiacos have struggled to gain any momentum in the EuroLeague, losing against ASVEL, Zenit Saint Petersburg and now Baskonia while having defeated Valencia in Piraeus on matchday two. Kestutis Kemzura replaced David Blatt at the helm after the first loss to ASVEL.

Olympiacos only picked up 31 rebounds in comparison to Baskonia’s 51 as the home team dominated the boards.

Commanding Serbian center Nikola Milutinov was once again the star man for Olympiacos, registering nine points and 10 rebounds. Brandon Paul (15), Vassilis Spanoulis (10), Will Cherry (10) and Augustine Rubit (10) all reached double figures in terms of points.

Tornike Shengelia scored 25 points for Baskonia and Youssoupha Fall grabbed an impressive 16 rebounds.

Baskonia travel to ASVEL for their next game, while Olympiacos face the daunting trip to reigning EuroLeague champions CSKA Moscow as they look to avoid a third consecutive defeat.

THE MATCH

Olympiacos kept it tight in the first period, even leading by a point midway through the quarter. After responding well, Baskonia were on the brink of emerging from the frame with a five-point lead, but Paul nailed a late three-pointer to get Olympiacos back to within two.

The Greek visitors continued to prevent Baskonia from running away with the game as they only lost the second quarter by three points.

Nevertheless, for all of their best efforts, Olympiacos were finding it increasingly difficult to keep the match close. A four-point victory in the third frame meant Baskonia held a commanding nine-point lead with 10 minutes remaining.

Baskonia subsequently began the decisive fourth quarter with a 7-0 run to firmly put themselves in the driving seat.

Olympiacos never threatened to make a dramatic comeback and Baskonia eased to their second win of the season.
