The hosts fell behind to an early AEK goal, but APOEL recovered to earn an important victory against a direct title contender.

AEK made the perfect start in Nicosia, striking within the opening twenty minutes. Tete sent a clever ball across the area, where Florian Taulemesse was waiting to blast in with the help of the crossbar. Nevertheless, Tete was about to go from hero to zero. The Spaniard tripped Emilio Nsue inside the penalty box, which resulted in the referee pointing to the spot. APOEL captain Nuno Moraes expertly converted the opportunity, lashing low into the left corner. The away team had a glorious chance to earn a second advantage, but Joan Tomas’ tricky effort smacked the woodwork.

The winning goal arrived at the 75th minute mark, and it was a special one. Barely inside the opposing half, Georgios Efrem caught AEK goalkeeper Juan Pablo sleeping with a simply delightful lob. Nsue made APOEL’s victory safe in stoppage time, slotting into the gaping net following excellent interchange play.

As a result, APOEL move two points clear in first place of the Cypriot First Division. AEK Larnaca find themselves in fourth, trailing the leaders by five points.
