Last year, it was decided that the whole structure of Greek club football needed to be changed, with the idea of creating a Super League 2 (which would replace the Football League as the second tier) being approved. The Football League will become the third level, while the Gamma Ethniki transforms into the fourth step on the ladder:

Top tier: Super League

Second tier: Super League 2

Third tier: Football League

Fourth tier: Gamma Ethniki

Recently, reports suggested that the creation of the Super League 2 was going to be delayed until the 2020/2021 season, but the media have now confirmed that Deputy Greek Minister of Sport Giorgos Vasiliadis is determined to have the league in action for the 2019/2020 campaign. A new legislation will be created in Greek law allowing for the Super League 2 to be officially created in time for next season.

Consequently, the plan to hold a relegation/promotion playoff between the 13th placed Super League team and second best Football League club will go ahead, while the bottom three clubs of the 2018/2019 Super League suffer direct relegation to the 2019/2020 Super League 2. The team in first position of the Football League earns automatic promotion to the elite level.

In accordance with the plan, the teams between third and 10th position of the 2018/2019 Football League will participate in the 2019/2020 Super League 2. Teams in 11th and 12th will play in the 2019/2020 Football League, and the clubs in the final four positions of the 2018/2019 Football League are demoted to the Gamma Ethniki. 12 teams will play in the Super League 2.

14 teams will play in the 2019/2020 Super League season, before in future years, that number will be reduced to 12.

On Thursday, the Super League Board of Directors will hold a meeting, in which the issue of restructuring for the 2019/2020 season is on the agenda for discussion.
