The Super League 2 will resume. However, in an interesting turn of events, more teams actually voted in favour of abandoning the season rather than successfully completing it. Nevertheless, an overall majority wasn’t reached, meaning that the campaign will be completed on the field of play. The season would have ended now had ¾ of the votes been in favour of an abandonment.

The 12 participating clubs, three Football League representatives, the Super League 2 president and a representative of the Hellenic Football Federation were eligible to vote. That number was reduced to 16, however, when Doxa Drama didn’t participate.

Six parties voted in favour of abandoning the season, five wanted to resume the season and five didn’t vote either way. As a result, despite more people voting for the campaign to be cancelled, the season will resume towards the end of June.

The Super League 2 released this following statement, revealing its desire for a restructuring of the league system in Greece:

“It was decided to continue and complete the 2019/2020 Super League season. The 21st round will be played on 29/06, and the 22nd on 04/07.

“It was decided to propose a comprehensive restructuring proposal to the Executive Committee of the Hellenic Football Federation, which would include 18 teams in the Super League 1, 16 in the Super League 2 and 14 in the Football League, without any relegation in the three categories.”

Two rounds of the Super League 2 regular season need to be played before the playoffs and playouts begin. As it stands, the team in first position is due to be immediately promoted to the top tier, while the second-placed club is set to compete in a relegation/promotion playoff against the Super League side in 13th spot.

FOOTBALL LEAGUE SEASON ENDS

On Tuesday, it was confirmed that the 2019/2020 Football League season is over, with the participating teams unable to pay the added costs concerning health protocols. At the same time, the Football League organisation also proposed major changes to the structure of the domestic ladder:

“It was decided to introduce a final suspension to the 2019/2020 Football League season.

“Two restructuring proposals are put forward:

“- The merging of the Super League 2 and Football League, with separate divisions introduced for the North and South;

“- Promotion of eight (8) teams from the Football League to the Super League 2, without any relegations.”

Trikala and Ionikos were in the first two positions of the Football League when the season was paused in March. Ialysos, Aspropyrgos, Triglia and Kalamata were occupying the four relegation places.
