The financial repercussions of the COVID-19 crisis will continue to be felt for a very long time. In March, football across the world came to a sharp standstill as a result of the pandemic, with both clubs and leagues consequently losing millions of euros. After a lengthy two-month break, domestic championships are now starting to return, but the fact that games are being played behind closed doors will have a big effect on teams’ pockets with no revenue generated.

The economical impact has clearly been displayed by figures provided by Transfermarkt.

At the start of March, the combined value of Super League clubs stood at 298.18 million, but it has now reduced by almost 52 million to 246.73. Interestingly, AEK have been hit the hardest, as their squad value has dropped by 19.7% from 34.6 million to 27.78. Olympiacos are in second spot in the last with a value decrease of 19.3%.

The value of Konstantinos Fortounis, still the Super League’s most valuable player, has fallen from 10 million to eight. The talented attacking midfielder has struggled to get back to his best with Olympiacos after returning from a serious knee injury in the second half of the campaign.

On the other hand, Panionios have suffered the lowest decrease in squad value, with the numbers having only dropped by 7.9% from 7.28 million to 6.70. The Panthers, bottom of the Super League standings after the regular season, do admittedly possess the smallest value in the Greek top tier.

The Super League playoffs and playouts are due to begin on June 6. Olympiacos, PAOK, AEK, Panathinaikos, OFI and Aris qualified for the championship playoffs, while Atromitos, AE Larissa, Asteras Tripolis, Lamia, Volos NFC, Xanthi, Panetolikos and Panionios dropped into the regulation playouts.
