Super League planning resumption as restrictions set to be relaxed

The Super League organisation, which will hold an important conference call on Tuesday, is putting together a plan to resume the season with restrictions in Greece set to be relaxed.

As a consequence of the coronavirus outbreak, the 2019/2020 Super League playoffs and playouts were postponed during early March, with the regular season having already been completed. Olympiacos, PAOK, AEK, Panathinaikos, OFI and Aris all qualified for the championship playoffs, while Atromitos, AE Larissa, Asteras Tripolis, Lamia, Volos NFC, Xanthi, Panetolikos and Panionios dropped into the relegation playouts.

The possibility of even cancelling the season was put on the table earlier in the month.

Nevertheless, with the Hellenic state ready to begin relaxing social restrictions from May 4, the likelihood of the Super League resuming by June has increased.

Professional clubs are expected to be issued the green light to resume training sessions in the first half of May. Taking into account the long break, players will need a few weeks in order to regain full fitness, meaning that the league will be able to restart at the start of June. Sport FM revealed that the Super League is predicted to resume on the weekend of June 6-7.

The season will end on July 18 with the Greek Cup final taking place.

Deputy Minister of Culture and Sport, Lefteris Avgenakis, has confirmed that all games are planned to be played behind closed doors as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last week, reports suggested that the playoffs will be played in Lamia, Larissa and Volos, while the playouts are staged in Athens. However, Sport FM subsequently stated that instead of that scheme being used, there is a higher probability of clubs hosting matches at their normal stadiums. OFI is the only club not representing Athens or Thessaloniki in the playoffs.

A key conference call is scheduled for Tuesday, with the Super League organisation preparing to present its plan to the 16 participating clubs. More concrete information concerning the resumption of the campaign will be released after the meeting ends.
