Super League ticket sales take impressive increase

Fans have returned to the stadiums in the 2018/2019 Super League, with the campaign seeing the highest amount of tickets sold since the 2011/2012 season.

Ever since the 2011/2012 season, Super League attendances have fallen, with less than one million tickets being sold in the 2014/2015 and 2017/2018 campaigns. Nevertheless, that’s all changed this year, with a grand total of 1,263,365 tickets having been purchased with one round of the championship still remaining. This is the highest amount of spectators in one particular Super League season since the 2011/2012 campaign, in which 1,287,181 tickets were sold.

The return of Aris and OFI to the top flight has played a major role in the increase. Boasting plenty of history and a large following, the two clubs have attracted high attendances in Thessaloniki and Heraklion respectively, and their fan bases are a lot bigger than the ones which 2017/2018 Super League clubs Platanias and AOK Kerkyra have. All major derbies between Olympiacos, Panathinaikos, AEK and PAOK have been played in front of fans rather than inside empty stadiums, whereas in the 2017/2018 campaign Olympiacos hosted Panathinaikos at a deserted Karaiskakis Stadium after receiving a ban.

However, while the rise in overall attendances has been pleasing, a few clubs have lost the trust of their fans. There is no better example than AEK. In the triumphant 2017/2018 season, AEK averaged 15,602 fans at their home matches in the Super League, but that figure has dramatically dropped to 9,621 in the current campaign. The reigning champions have endured a tough season with in-fighting and a lack of consistency, and in response, the fans have stopped attending the Olympic Stadium with their belief in the team having drastically waned. AEK currently occupy third place of the standings, two points ahead of Atromitos.

AEL (-1046), Apollon Smyrnis (-949), Atromitos (-86), Xanthi (-67), Lamia (-56), Panetolikos (-28) and Panionios (-16) have also seen their average attendances fall in comparison to the 2017/2018 season, while Panathinaikos (+2036), Olympiacos (+1960), PAOK (+1690) have notably gained larger crowds.
