It is an exciting time for the Greek Super League. With the regular season now complete, teams will now turn their attention to competing in a highly-competitive playoff/playout postseason. The top teams will play for the championship and European positions, while the bottom teams aim to avoid relegation.
Ticket sales for the regular season have soared from previous seasons. However, the number could have been larger, with a total of six matches played behind closed doors this season. This includes the derby of the eternal rivals between Olympiacos and Panathinaikos, which always sells out at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium.
A total of 1,166,250 tickets were sold across 176 matches that were played with fans access this season. The average attendance for the 2019/20 regular season was 6,626, which is the largest average in nine years. Last season, the average was 5,432 tickets per match, meaning this season saw an increase of 1,194 tickets per game. In the 2017/18 season, the average was even lower at 4,236.
A significant reason for the increase in ticket sales is due to the successful season of the league’s biggest clubs, with Olympiacos and PAOK contending for top spot until the commencement of the last matchday. Ticket sales also increased due to OFI’s successful campaign as they improved from 13th last season to sixth this season, while sleeping-giants Panathinaikos also improved from eighth spot to fourth.
