Super League to resume at weekend as referees withdraw strike threat

The 17th round of the 2019/2020 Super League, scheduled to take place this weekend, will be played after referees withdrew their threat of striking.

Following the attack on the home of Angelos Evangelou, who was working over the video assistant referee (VAR) system during the controversial Volos - Olympiacos match, all referees initially decided to abstain from Super League and Greek Cup games until a solution to the ongoing issue of aggression towards officials was sorted out. 

However, after the Super League ordered the Hellenic Football Federation to ensure the smooth running of matches scheduled for January 4-5, the referees have eventually decided to make a u-turn and withdraw their threat of striking.

The vast majority of officials voted in favour of working at Super League games during a voting process which finished at 21:00 on Wednesday evening. The vote was originally supposed to have been completed a day earlier.

The Super League organisation released this following statement:

“All of football is together! Together for the first games of 2020, with the matches set to begin in the 17th round of the championship. Two classic derbies and five interesting match-ups are scheduled for this weekend.”
