On Wednesday morning, Larissa referee, Athanasios Tzilos, was attacked by four masked men outside of his car and as a result, was sent to the hospital with various injuries. The news of the attack sent alarm bells throughout the country and many teams and organizations quickly condemned the attack.

In response to the event, the Super League’s referees released a joint statement informing the Hellenic Football Federation (EPO) and Central Refereeing Committee (K.E.D) that they will not officiate matches this weekend due to psychological reasons. Although the federation hoped that fixtures would take place as planned, the referee’s decision to abstain from this weekend’s matches was accepted.

As a result, the EPO and the Greek Super League informed clubs through an official statement that all matchday 15 fixtures in the first division, scheduled for this weekend, will be postponed. The referees have not set a date as to when they will return to action, but there is hope that an agreement will be reached before matchday 16, which is scheduled for January 12-13th.

The federation plans to take action and enforce a program that protects referees from future incidents such as these. On January 4th, representatives from the EPO, K.E.D, Super League, first division referees, and FIFA/UEFA will meet to discuss this matter among others.
