Chile won their second straight Copa America after defeating Argentina in penalties. Both normal regulation and overtime ended goalless sending the match to a penalty shootout. Chile prevailed 4-3 as both Messi and Biglia failed to convert their penalties for Argentina. Another disappointing ending for Messi with Argentina…

The referee was the highlight of the first half for sending off a player from each team. Both decisions were controversial and the teams were left with 10 men. Diaz for Chile was handed his second yellow card in the 28th minute and 15 minutes later Rojo was given a straight red for his tackle on Vidal. Higuain had the best opportunity of the half, but was unable to convert his one-on-one chance with the goalie. Like the first half, both teams created minimal threats on goal in the second 45 minutes and the game went to overtime. The best chance in extra time fell to Argentina, but Bravo made an acrobatic fingertip save to keep the score level. With neither team finding the back of the net, the match was sent to the agonizing penalty shoot out.

Vidal was first up for Chile and Romero made a great save to deny the Bayern Munich star. Messi stepped up to give his team the advantage, but his penalty went over the crossbar. Chile then converted there next 3 penalties before Bravo saved Biglia’s penalty (Argentina’s 4th). Gato Silva stepped up and his shot beat Romero, giving Chile their second straight Copa America Title.

This year’s final was a repeat of last year’s championship game with Chile prevailing in penalties after a goalless draw. Argentina remain titleless since 1993 when they won their last Copa America. It is another disappointing end for Messi and Argentina, who failed to win their third straight final after last year’s Copa America and the 2014 FIFA World Cup Final against Germany.
