The draw results for the 2017/18 Greek Cup group stages
On Friday, the draw for the 2017/18 Greek Cup group stage took place at the offices of the Hellenic Football Federation.
Similar to recent seasons, the first round of the Greek Football Cup will be played in a group stage format that includes the teams from the Greek Superleague and Football League. Eight groups of four teams were formed with each group containing two teams from the Superleague (16 teams) and two teams from the Football League (16 teams).
Since the Football League currently has 17 teams, Agrotikos Asteras will not take part in next year’s second division, there will be a play-in game between two Football League sides for a place in the group stages. Veria and Aiginiakos will compete in the play-in game after the results of today’s draw at the EPO offices. Veria and Aiginiakos will play in a two-legged playoff which will be held on August 19/20 and August 29/30.
The draw for the group stages also took place at the Federation’s offices which produced some interesting groups. Olympiacos will be up against the likes of Asteras Tripolis while Panathinaikos will face Larissa and newly promoted Football League side Panachaiki. Group 7 which consists of Panionios, PAS Giannina, Aris, and Panegialios also looks to be a well-balanced group.
In the groups, each team will play the other once with the Football League sides enjoying two home games and the Superleague sides playing one game at home. Matchday 1 will take place September 19-21, matchday 2 will be October 24-26, and the final matchday will be held November 28-30. The top two teams from each group will advance to the round of 16.

Group 1: Platanias, Apollon Smyrnis, OFI, Iraklis
Group 2: PAOK, Levadiakos, Apollon Pontou, Aiginiakos/Veria
Group 3: AEK, Lamia, Apollon Larissas, Kallithea
Group 4: Atromitos, Kerkyra, Sparti, Trikala
Group 5: Olympiacos, Asteras Tripolis, Acharnaikos, Kissamikos
Group 6: Xanthi, Panetolikos, Panserraikos, Ergotelis
Group 7: Panionios, PAS Giannina, Aris, Panegialios
Group 8: Panathinaikos, Larissa, Anagennisi Karditsas, Panachaiki
